and heaviness was not measured by weight but distance

“Through material explorations, Reyhan Yazdani investigates the construction of collective identities using her own personal family archives in dialogue with institutional collections. An artist of multilingual heritage originally from Iran, Yazdani seeks to create objects and spatial compositions that are layered, dispersed and poetic reflecting on diasporic identities and the present moment of Iran. For this series of work, Yazdani shows familiar household objects, maps, and papers that are abstracted and re-materialized, processing what has been lost, hidden or taken away in the current history of Iran under the governance of the Islamic Republic. Yazdani’s broader interdisciplinary practice engages with ontological, material, and spatial explorations of exile, politics of belonging, and diasporic understanding of self, place and memory.”
