The act of removal is an important gesture that repeats itself in my works. Growing up as a young girl in Iran, hiding, censoring, covering and removing were the skills I learnt soon about my identity as a woman. In this body of work, with developing my own recipe of paper clay, I worked on papers of my personal journals and removed, hide, and covered words with the paper-clay in a performative gesture. This work tends to raise awareness about the oppression and social implications of such misogyny and patriarchy. The martial residues of this performance were then fired and exhibited in the Sculpture Gallery at Emily Carr University. Intentionally, they were not hanged on the wall rather leaned, resembling the crowd of women wearing black hijab, and creating a rain-like sound from the vibration of the steps when visitors walked close by it as if they are mourning a loss.
